ABOUT Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) plays a crucial role in the Indian government’s efforts to safeguard our natural world. Their main focus revolves around protecting our lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife, while also ensuring the well-being of animals and combating pollution. Guided by the principle of sustainable development, they aim to improve the lives of people while preserving our environment.

Moreover, the Ministry serves as a central hub for various international environmental initiatives, such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP). They’re also responsible for coordinating with regional bodies like the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), all with the aim of addressing environmental challenges on a global scale.

Climate Resilience Building Among Farmers Through Crop Residue ManagementReduce climate change impacts by managing crop residue effectively.– Conducted in staggered approach. – Includes awareness-raising and capacity-building activities for sustainable practices. – Aims to diversify livelihood options.
Secure Himalaya ProjectProtect biodiversity and resources in the Himalayan ecosystem.– Spans four states: Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim. – Protects snow leopards and other endangered species. – Six years long.
Green Skill Development ProgrammeSkill young individuals, particularly dropouts, and increase employment opportunities.– Environmental and Forest Skills Development Initiative aims for employment/self-employment. – Courses aligned with National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).
National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)Implement measures to reduce air pollution.– Aims for 20-30% reduction in particulate matter by 2024. – Introduced in 102 non-attainment cities. – Executed by CPCB.
Integrated Development of Wildlife HabitatsProvide support for wildlife conservation activities.– Support for protected areas and wildlife rehabilitation projects. – Financial and technical assistance provided to states/UTs.
PARIVESHMonitor compliance records for environmental clearances.– Web-based system for online submission and monitoring of proposals. – Hosted by MoEFCC with support from NIC. – Provides access to previous Environment Impact Assessment Reports.
Himalayan Research Fellowships SchemeTrain environmental managers, ecologists, and socioeconomists.– Implemented through institutions and universities in the Indian Himalayan Region. – Financial support provided under NMHS. – Fellowships up to 3 years.
