Key Facts

  • Location: This state is located in Northeastern India.
  • Borders: It is bordered by Bangladesh to the north, south, and west, and by the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram to the east.
  • Mountain Ranges: Five mountain ranges run north to south, including Boromura, Atharamura, Longtharai, and Shakhanand Jampui Hills, with valleys in between.
  • Capital: The capital of this state is Agartala, which is located on a plain to the west.
  • Climate: The state has a tropical savanna climate and receives seasonal heavy rains from the southwest monsoon.
  • Primate Species: It boasts the highest number of primate species found in any Indian state.
  • Vegetation: The majority of the vegetation is comprised of two types of moist deciduous forests: moist deciduous mixed forest and Sal (Shorea robusta)-predominant forest.
  • Ecosystems: The state hosts three different types of ecosystems: mountain, forest, and freshwater.
  • Lake Rudrsagar: Lake Rudrsagar is the only lake in eastern India with a palace located within it.
  • Neermahal: Neermahal is a cultural Water Palace located in this state.
