Tina Dabi has captured the public’s attention and imagination in a way few government officials have. In 2015, she made history by becoming the first Dalit woman to secure the top position in the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam. Her journey, marked by achievements and controversies, has made her an aspirational figure for many. From her groundbreaking success to her high-profile marriages and now embracing motherhood, the IAS officer’s story is truly remarkable.
Let’s delve into the fascinating trajectory of Tina Dabi’s life.
Generations in Service to Our Country!
Born on November 9, 1993, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Tina Dabi hails from a family with a strong legacy of serving the country. Her father, Jaswant, held the position of general manager at BSNL, and her mother, Himani, was employed in the Indian Engineering Service. Continuing the tradition, her younger sister Ria also serves as an IAS officer.
Smart from the Start!
Dabi concluded her secondary education at the esteemed Jesus And Mary Convent School, achieving an impressive feat with a perfect score of 100 in her Political Science and History papers. Her academic journey continued at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, specializing in Political Science. Recognizing her outstanding scholastic achievements, she was honored as the ‘Student Of The Year’ during her time at the college.
Making History
Dabi started studying for the exam in the first year of college. She became one of the lucky few to crack it in the first attempt. She also became the first Dalit (a marginalised caste in India) woman with such a feat.
A Failed First Marriage
However, Dabi had already experienced the spotlight prior to this. In 2018, she made headlines for her interfaith marriage with fellow IAS officer Athar Aamir Khan. Both belonging to the Rajasthan cadre, their love story unfolded during their training period. Despite their union attracting attention, particularly from fringe elements of the right wing, the couple faced considerable trolling.
However, the marriage proved to be short-lived, and in 2021, Dabi and Khan decided to part ways.
Tina Dabi Gives Second Chance To Love…
Dabi’s personal journey underscores the notion that it’s never too late to find ‘the one.’ In April 2022, she entered a new chapter in her life by marrying fellow IAS officer Pradeep Gawande.
Their paths crossed during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, as both were actively involved in overseeing supplies for the Health Department of Rajasthan. Their union was solemnized in the presence of a portrait of the late Dalit rights activist-lawyer, BR Ambedkar.
