Appointed Day for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories as per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019

States and capitals of India

India, situated in South Asia, holds the distinction of being the seventh-largest country globally in terms of land area. It is geographically organized into 28 states and 8 union territories, each possessing its own capital city. These states and union territories are further subdivided into districts and subdivisions for administrative purposes.

The capital city of India itself is New Delhi, situated in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, serving as the epicenter for administration, politics, and culture within the country.

An unprecedented event occurred with the enactment of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act in 2019, which stipulated October 31 as the designated day for the formation of two Union Territories, namely Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This was the first instance of a state being divided into two Union Territories. As of January 26, 2020, India will have a total of 8 union territories in addition to the existing 28 states.

India, a federal union comprising 36 distinct entities, consists of 28 states and 8 union territories. However, as of January 26th, the merger of Daman and Diu with Dadra and Nagar Haveli has resulted in the formation of a single union territory. This significant consolidation was enacted through a Bill that successfully passed during the winter session of Parliament, effectively reducing the total number of Union Territories to eight.

It is worth noting that some states in India, namely Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand, follow a unique practice of holding their legislative assemblies in different capital cities for their summer and winter sessions. This arrangement ensures equitable representation and accommodates the diverse geographic regions within these states.

Similarly, in the case of Ladakh, the newly formed union territory, there are two administrative capitals, namely Leh and Kargil. This dual administrative setup acknowledges and caters to the distinctive characteristics and requirements of different regions within Ladakh.

India’s states and union territories are further divided into various administrative divisions, including districts. Each state in India possesses its own administrative, judicial, and legislative centers. While some sources indicate that all three functions are performed in the same capital city, it may vary in specific cases. In every state, a Chief Minister assumes the responsibility of governing and leading the state’s affairs.
