The Indian subcontinent has a history of devastating earthquakes. The major reason for the high frequency and earthquake proneness in India is that the Indian plate is driving into Eurasia at a rate of approximately 47 mm/year.
- Geographical statistics of India show that almost 58% of the land is vulnerable to earthquakes.
- Himalayan belt: Collision between Indo-Austral plate with Eurasian plate and Burma Plate with Java Sumatra plate. This collision causes lots of strain in underlying rocks’ energy of which is released in the form of earthquakes.
