Aarti Holla-Maini: Indian-origin satellite industry expert Aarti was on Tuesday appointed as the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Aarti will succeed Simonetta Di Pippo of Italy.

Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, has chosen Aarti Holla-Maini, an established satellite industry professional of Indian descent, to lead the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna. Following the tenure of Italian citizen Simonetta Di Pippo, she was appointed. UNOOSA’s main goal is to encourage international cooperation in the safe exploration and use of space, as well as the efficient use of space research and technology to achieve long-term economic and social advancement.

Aarti Holla-Maini enters her new post with more than 25 years of professional experience in the space industry, including administrative and advocacy responsibilities. Prior to her appointment as the Director of UNOOSA, Aarti Holla-Maini served as the Executive Vice-President of Sustainability, Policy & Impact at NorthStar Earth & Space. Prior to that, Holla-Maini held the impressive post of Secretary-General for an impressive 18 years at the Global Satellite Operators Association.

Aarti Holla-Maini has made important contributions to the space sector during her career. She was a member of the Advisory Group for the Space Sustainability Rating run by the École Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) Space Centre as well as the Global Future Council on Space for the World Economic Forum.
