The New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI) is the largest public-private partnership effort within the R&D domain in the country.
It looks beyond today’s technology and thus seeks to build, capture and retain for India a leadership position by synergizing the best competencies of publicly funded R&D institutions, academia, and private industry.
Objective: NMITLI seeks to catalyze innovation-centered scientific and technological developments as a vehicle to attain for Indian industry a global leadership position, in selected niche areas in a true ‘Team India’ spirit, by synergizing the best competencies of publicly funded R&D institutions, academia, and private industry.
ATOMIC ENERGY
The Parliament passed the Atomic Energy Bill in 1948. Following that, on March 1, 1958, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was established in the Department, and Homi Bhabha became its first chairman. On August 3, 1954, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was set up under the direct charge of the Prime Minister through a Presidential Order. Subsequently, in accordance with a Government Resolution dated Atomic Energy. The Prime Minister (late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru) also laid a copy of this Resolution on the table of the Lok Sabha on March 24, 1958.
Department of Atomic Energy Details
After that in 1954, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was established with the following objectives:
- Generating electricity from nuclear energy through the use of the naturally available uranium and thorium in India.
- Building research reactors and implementing the radioisotopes produced in reactors for application in the fields of agriculture, industry, and medicine.
- Developing advanced technology in domains like lasers, accelerators, information technology, and biotechnology.
- Developing materials including strategic and non-nuclear ones like titanium
- Playing a role in national security
- Contributing to industrial development by promoting technology transfers and interaction with the industry
- Offering support to fundamental research in nuclear energy and other areas of science
- Coordinating with academic institutions to enhance the quality of education and research and also offering research grants to these institutions

- Bhabha’s vision and Indian scientists made India self-reliant in nuclear tech, defying international controls.
- DAE develops nuclear and radiation tech for medicine, industry, agriculture, and sciences.
- The apex body of the DAE is the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
- Dr. Sekhar Basu, who is currently the Secretary of Atomic Energy, holds the position of Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). In this role, he serves as the ex officio executive head of the Department of Atomic Energy, which has its headquarters in Mumbai.
- This department is directly under the Prime Minister of the country.
- This department has 6 research institutions, 5 public sector companies, 3 industrial organizations, 3 service organizations, and 3 universities under it. The DAE also supports many other research institutes of eminence in India.
- The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) located in Mumbai is under the DAE.
- The universities under it are Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad & Mumbai.
- DAE supports institutes like NBHM, Tata Memorial Centre, Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, Institute of Physics, and Institute for Plasma Research.
- The DAE is responsible for the country achieving a high level of indigenization in the nuclear technology and nuclear fuel cycle.
- The total number of employees in the DAE is classified information and the annual budget is Rs.12461 crore.
- The minister responsible for the DAE is the current PM, Shri Narendra Modi.
- The deputy minister is Shri Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State for the PMO. The parent department of the DAE is the PMO.
