History:

World Population Day is observed annually on July 11th to raise awareness about global population issues and their impact on social, economic, and environmental aspects. The day was established by the United Nations in 1989, inspired by the significance of the world’s population reaching five billion people on July 11, 1987.

The day was suggested by Dr K.C. Zachariah. It was sparked by excitement on Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, roughly the day the world’s population surpassed five billion. The goal of World Population Day is to raise awareness of a variety of population-related issues, including the value of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.

Significance:

World Population Day focuses on bringing forth the prevalent issues related to global population. From the problems faced by the women of the world to the economic crisis to poverty – World Population Day is a reminder to make conscious efforts in changing the lives of people and making them better. The United Nations focuses on celebrating the day with the motive of creating a world where each and every person has a bursting future full of promises, potential and opportunities. It also aims to create a sustainable future for everyone, as envisioned by Agenda Sustainable Goals 2030.

Why is World Population Day celebrated?

World Population Day focuses on the urgency and importance of population issues. It was established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989, after the Day of Five Billion — the day the world approximately reached the population of five billion — which was observed on 11 July 1987.

In December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had decided to continue to observe the World Population Day in order to spread awareness regarding population issues, including their impact on the environment as well as development.

On July 11 1990, over 90 countries celebrated the World Population Day and since then it has been acknowledged by nations, organisations and institutions.
