What is Hydrography?

In the scientific field of hydrography, the physical features of lakes, rivers, coastal areas, and oceans are measured and described. Predicting how these qualities will evolve over time is another aspect of it. Hydrography’s main goals are to support diverse marine activities like economic growth, security and defence, scientific research, and environmental conservation while ensuring the safety of navigation.

Hydrography facilitates the exploitation of resources such as fish and minerals while enabling effective environmental protection and management. It also involves establishing national marine spatial data infrastructures, enhancing maritime defense and security, conducting tsunami flood and inundation modeling, and advancing marine science.
