Seven Volcanic Summits

The Volcanic Seven Summits are the highest volcanoes on each of the seven continents, seven-volcanic-summits...

The Volcanic Seven Summits are the highest volcanoes on each of the seven continents, just as the Seven Summits are the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. Summiting all seven is regarded as a mountaineering challenge, first postulated as such in 1999.

About:

  • She has successfully climbed 3 Mountains- Kilimanjaro, Damavand, and Elbrus.
  • She has to climb four more Mountains- Mount Sidley in Antarctica, Mount Giluwe in Papua New Guinea, and Ojos del Salado on the Argentina-Chile border.
  • Two of the Volcanic Seven Summits, Kilimanjaro and Elbrus, are also members of the Seven Summits.

What are Seven Volcanic Summits?

The  Seven Volcanic Summits are the highest volcanoes on each continent, just as the Seven Summits are the highest peaks on each continent.

Seven Volcanic Summits (Highest to Lowest)

  • Ojos del Salado – South America
  • Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa
  • Mount Elbrus – Europe
  • Pico de Orizaba – North America
  • Mount Damavand – Asia
  • Mount Giluwe New Guinea
  • Mountain Sidley  – Antarctica

1. Ojos del salado – South America

Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano in the world, located on the border between Chile and Argentina, in the Atacama Desert. Climbing Ojos del Salado is challenging due to its high altitude, extreme weather conditions, and technical difficulties in some sections of the ascent. But it’s also fascinating due to the stunning views of the Atacama Desert and the surrounding Andean peaks. One of the unique features of Ojos del Salado is the presence of a crater lake Laguna del Inca, located at an altitude of 6 390 m, which is considered the highest lake in the world.

2. Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa

At the same time, Kilimanjaro is the highest volcano, the highest summit in Africa, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The climb to Kilimanjaro can be ticked in 2 programs at once. Although there are many routes, we chose the Marangu route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route”. It’s the oldest and most well-established trekking route on Kilimanjaro, and it remains extremely popular mainly because it is the only route that has hut accommodation for trekkers.

3. Mount Elbrus – Europe

Elbrus is a dormant stratovolcano located in the Caucasus Mountains of Southern Russia. It’s the highest peak in Europe and a popular destination for mountaineers and hikers. Reaching the summit of Mount Elbrus is a unique and rewarding experience that offers spectacular views of the Caucasus Mountains and the Russian landscape

4. Pico de Orizaba – North America

Mount Orizaba is located in Mexico and is well known for its impressive glaciers and ice formations. Despite being located in a relatively hot region, the summit of Mount Orizaba is often covered in snow and ice. The climb usually takes between two and four days, depending on the route and the climber’s level of experience. One of the unique aspects of climbing Mount Orizaba is the diversity of the terrain and ecosystems that climbers encounter during the ascent. Climbers pass through arid deserts filled with cacti, before ascending into high-altitude forests and eventually reaching the glaciers and snowfields near the summit.

5. Mount Damavand – Asia

Damavand is the highest volcano in Asia and the highest summit in Iran. One of the highlights of climbing Mount Damavand is experiencing the rich cultural heritage of Iran, with its ancient ruins, mosques, and bazaars. Many climbers choose to spend some time exploring the historic cities of Tehran before embarking on the climb.

6. Mount Giluwe – New Guinea

Mount Giluwe is located in Papua New Guinea and is the second-highest mountain in the country. The climb to Mount Giluwe is a unique and challenging experience for mountaineers, as it involves trekking through dense jungle and encountering remote tribes. Along the way, climbers may encounter local tribes who have lived in the area for centuries and have a unique way of life that is far removed from modern civilization

7. Mountain Sidley  – Antarctica

Mount Sidley is the highest volcano in Antarctica and the highest point on the continent. Climbing Mount Sidley can be a significant challenge due to its remote location, extreme weather conditions, and technical difficulty. It requires specialized gear and support, as well as experience in mountaineering.
