Department of Science & Technology (DST) was established in May 1971, with the objective of promoting new areas of Science & Technology and playing the role of a nodal department for organizing, coordinating, and promoting S&T activities in the country. The Department has major responsibilities for specific projects and programs as listed below:

1. Formulating Science and Technology Policies

The department is responsible for developing policies related to science and technology.

2. Scientific Advisory Committee of the Cabinet (SACC)

Handling matters concerning the SACC falls within its purview.

3. Promoting Emerging Areas in Science and Technology

Special emphasis is given to promoting new and emerging fields within science and technology.

4. Research and Development for Indigenous Technologies

Conducting research and development activities to advance indigenous technologies, especially in biofuel production, processing, standardization, and applications.

5. Value-Added Chemicals from By-Products

Initiating research and development activities to utilize by-products for the production of value-added chemicals.

6. Futurology

The department engages in futurology activities to anticipate future scientific and technological trends.

7. Coordination Across Science & Technology Areas

Ensuring coordination and integration of science and technology areas with cross-sectoral linkages.

8. Scientific and Technological Surveys

Undertaking or financially sponsoring scientific and technological surveys, research design, and development as needed.

9. Support to Scientific Research Institutions

Providing support and grants-in-aid to scientific research institutions, associations, and bodies.

10. Oversight of Various Entities

Handling matters related to various entities such as the Science and Engineering Research Council, Technology Development Board, National Council for Science & Tech Communication, and others.

11. International Science and Technology Cooperation

Managing international science and technology cooperation, including the appointment of scientific attaches abroad in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs.

12. Oversight of Autonomous Institutions

Supervising autonomous science and technology institutions under the Department of Science and Technology.

13. Management of Professional Science Academies

Managing professional science academies funded by the Department of Science & Tech.

14. Mapping and Spatial Data Infrastructure

Overseeing institutions like the Survey of India, National Atlas, and Thematic Mapping Organisation, along with promoting GIS and the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

15. National Innovation Foundation

Handling matters related to the National Innovation Foundation in Ahmadabad.

16. Inter-Agency/Inter-Departmental Coordination

Coordinating inter-agency and inter-departmental efforts for evolving science and technology missions.

17. Domestic Technology Promotion

Addressing matters concerning domestic technology, excluding those under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

18. Comprehensive Measures for Science and Tech Promotion

Implementing various measures essential for promoting science and technology and their application for national development and security.

19. Institutional Science and Technology Capacity Building

Addressing matters related to institutional capacity building in science and technology, including the establishment of new institutions and infrastructure.

20. Grassroots Development through State Science and Technology Councils

Promoting science and technology at the state, district, and village levels for grassroots development through State Science and Technology Councils and other mechanisms.

21. Application of Science and Technology for Social Inclusion

Focusing on applying science and technology for the benefit of weaker sections, women, and other disadvantaged segments of society.
