Ranthambore National Park is a national park in Rajasthan, India, with an area of 1,334 km2 (515 sq mi). The Banas River bounds the park to the north, while the Chambal River bounds it to the south. The park derives its name from the historic Ranthambore Fort, which is located within its boundaries.

About the Ranthambore National Park

The Ranthambore National Park is one of the largest and the most well known National Park in the Northern India. The Ranthambore National Park is located in the Sawai Madhopur district which is in southeastern Rajasthan. It is located 130 km from Jaipur. Once the renowned hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park has become a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. Its abundant biodiversity and captivating wildlife attract many visitors who are eager to experience the natural beauty of the region.

Brief Journey of Ranthambore National Park

  • 1955– The reserve was earlier being established as the Sawai Madhopur Gaming Sanctuary by the Government of India.
  • 1973– Later it was declared as one of the Project Tiger Reserves in India.
  • 1980– Ranthambore became a national park.
  • 1984– The adjacent forests were declared as Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary.
  • 1991– The tiger reserve was enlarged to include Sawai Mansingh and Kaladevi Sanctuaries.

Economic valuation of the tiger reserve estimated that its flow benefits are worth 8.3 billion rupees (0.56 lakh/hectare) annually. Gene-pool protection services (7.11 billion), provisioning of water to the neighboring region (115 million) and provisioning of habitat and refugia for wildlife (182 million) were some of the important services that emanated from the tiger reserve. Other services included nutrient cycling (34 million) and sequestration of carbon (69 million).
