On Friday, Rajesh Kumar Singh officially assumed the role of Defence Secretary at the South Block, taking over from Giridhar Aramane. Mr. Aramane, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, retired on October 31, 2024, after serving a distinguished two-year tenure in the position.
Tribute to Fallen Heroes
Before assuming his duties, Mr. Singh laid a wreath and paid homage to the fallen heroes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, underscoring his commitment to the responsibilities that lie ahead. Mr. Singh, a 1989-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, had previously taken charge as Officer on Special Duty (Defence Secretary-designate) on August 20, signaling his transition to this pivotal role.
Professional Background and Experience
Prior to his appointment as Defence Secretary, Mr. Singh served as Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, a post he held from April 24, 2023, to August 20, 2024. His tenure there focused on driving industrial growth and enhancing trade policies. Before that, Mr. Singh also held the position of Secretary in the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying within the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying.
