Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D)

PGI-D

The Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) was released by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), marking a substantial improvement in the educational system. The Ministry of Education conducted this extensive report with the goal of evaluating and improving district-level school performance.

Understanding PGI-D

A ground-breaking study that assesses the efficiency of the educational system in various districts across the nation is called the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D).

Insights from the PGI-D
  1. Scale of Education: The Indian Education System boasts an impressive network, with approximately 14.9 lakh (or 1,490,000) schools catering to around 26.5 crore (or 265 million) students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
  2. Educators’ Strength: To support this vast educational landscape, there are approximately 95 lakh (or 9.5 million) dedicated teachers working tirelessly to impart knowledge and shape young minds.
  3. PGI-D Structure: The PGI-D utilizes an 83-indicator-based grading system that falls under six categories and 12 domains. These categories include Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure Facilities & Student’s Entitlements, School Safety & Child Protection, Digital Learning, and Governance Process.
  4. Grading System: The PGI-D grades districts on a scale of ten. The highest grade, Daksh, is achieved by districts scoring over 90% of the total points, while the lowest grade, Akanshi-3, represents scores up to 10% of the total points.
Objective and Impact

The PGI-D’s main goal is to provide districts the authority to identify and prioritise the areas that need improvement in order to improve performance. Districts may enhance educational results and provide students with a comprehensive, high-quality learning experience by concentrating on the listed topics and categories.
