Nobel Peace Prize 2024

Content:

The Nobel Peace Prize 2024 has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese grassroots organization representing atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha. The Swedish Academy made the announcement on Friday, October 11, 2024.

The Nobel Committee recognized Nihon Hidankyo for its relentless efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons and for raising awareness of the devastating effects of nuclear warfare through survivor testimonies. Their mission is to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used again, and their witness testimonies serve as a powerful reminder of the destruction caused by the atomic bombs dropped in 1945.

Key Objectives of Nihon Hidankyo:

  • Prevention of nuclear war and the elimination of nuclear weapons.
  • Advocacy for an international agreement on the total ban and elimination of nuclear weapons.
  • Representation of Hibakusha across all 47 Japanese prefectures, ensuring the rights and voices of atomic bomb survivors are heard.
  • Last year, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, and in 2014, India’s Kailash Satyarthi shared the award with Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai.

Nobel Prize Announcements:

  • The 2024 Nobel prizes for Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology/Medicine were announced earlier this week.
  • On October 10, South Korean author Han Kang became the first from her country to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
  • The Economics Nobel Prize will be announced on October 14, 2024.
  • Each Nobel Prize includes a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million), and laureates are invited to a ceremony on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
