If you’re planning a unique holiday before the year ends, consider attending Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival. Known as one of India’s most vibrant cultural celebrations, this annual festival spans 10 days and is affectionately dubbed the “Festival of Festivals.” What makes 2024 particularly special? It’s the festival’s 25th anniversary, celebrating a Silver Jubilee that highlights 25 years of Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage.
A Global Attraction
The Hornbill Festival draws not just local but international visitors who flock to Nagaland to partake in this cultural extravaganza. G Hukugha Sema, the tourism secretary, has called on tribal organizations to ensure a grand experience for tourists, treating them as “special guests” throughout the festival. Emphasizing comfort, Sema urged collaboration with the government to create a welcoming atmosphere for the thousands of expected attendees.
Enhancements for 2024
In preparation for this milestone celebration, a master plan is underway to revamp and renovate the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, the main venue for the festival. Renovation works are projected to be completed by November 17.
From Humble Beginnings to a Major Event
Launched in 2000 as a modest three-day event in Kohima, the Hornbill Festival has transformed into a major tourism highlight for Nagaland, now extending over 10 days. Visitors can immerse themselves in tribal living, savor traditional food, engage in games, enjoy music and dance performances, and explore local handicrafts and textiles. The venue shifted to Kisama in the mid2000s, allowing for greater tourist participation.
