Nag River

Nag River

Nagpur, a city in Maharashtra, got its name from the Nag River that flows through it. The river is a crucial component of the Kanhan-Pench river system.

About Nag River

  • The Nagpur city derives its name from the Nag river which passes through the city.
  • The Nag river originates from the Ambazari Lake in west Nagpur.
  • Major Tributaries – Pili river. End point – confluence with Kanhan River.
  • It is approved under the National River Conservation Plan and will be implemented by the National River Conservation Directorate(NRCD).
  • It will reduce the pollution level in terms of untreated sewage, flowing solid waste and other impurities flowing into the Nag river and its tributaries.

Nag River Rejuvenation

In 2019, the Nag River Rejuvenation project got the green light with a budget of Rs 2,434 crores, which was initially Rs 1,476 crores. The increase in cost was mainly because of delays in approvals and the impact of GST. The central government is contributing 60% of the funds, while the state government is pitching in 25%, and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation covers the rest. The Japan International Cooperation Agency is set to approve the long-pending loan for both the central and state governments. It’s worth noting that the Nag River Rejuvenation project also includes the revitalization of the Pioli River.

Nag River Revitalisation Project

  • In October 2021, the Union Cabinet gave the green light to the River revitalization project.
  • The project, spearheaded by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highway, got a budget of Rs 2,117 crores.
  • The project is on a deadline of eight years for completion.The National River Conservation Directorate will be the driving force behind its implementation.
  • The plan involves setting up sewage lines and sewage treatment plants along the River.
  • Loans for the project will be provided by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
  • The funds are coming in through the National River Conservation Plan.
  • The primary aim of the project is to bring down pollution levels in the Nag River.
  • This involves tackling untreated sewage, solid waste, and other impurities that currently find their way into the river.
