Mt. Sinabung

Mt. Sinabung, located on Sumatra Island in Indonesia, has recently erupted. Joining the volcanic activity, other notable volcanoes in Indonesia, namely Merapi and Semeru, have also experienced eruptions. About Mt. Sinabung

  • Mt. Sinabung, an active volcano on Indonesia’s Sumatra island has erupted.
  • Mt. Sinabung (2,600-metre) is located in Karo regency, North Sumatra.
  • Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
  • The volcano was dormant for 400 years before exploding in 2010.
  • It exploded again in 2014 ,2016 and 2020.

Ring of Fire

  • The Ring of Fire, or the Circum-Pacific Belt, is a dynamic zone around the Pacific Ocean known for its active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
  • This region is shaped by the intersections of multiple tectonic plates, including the Pacific, Cocos, Indian-Australian, Nazca, North American, and Philippine Plates.
  • The significant volcanic and seismic activity along the Ring of Fire results from the continual movement of these tectonic plates in the area.
  • Remarkably, over 450 volcanoes, constituting 75% of Earth’s total, are situated along the Ring of Fire.
  • Additionally, a staggering 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur along this path, making it a hotspot for geological events.
