Chandrayaan 3 Live Updates

Chandrayaan 3 Live Updates: Moon landing of Chandrayaan-3 will start around 5:47 pm and continue till 6:04 pm

Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing live updates: After a 40-day journey starting from the Sathish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission has landed successfully. The Vikram lander should made a soft lunar landing at 6.04 PM IST on August 23.

ISRO started the automatic landing sequence at 5.44 PM IST. The Vikram lander is now using its onboard computers and logic to try to make a soft landing on the Moon. While mission controllers at ISTRAC will monitor it closely, the onboard systems of the lander will be doing all the heavy lifting.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is the follow-up to the Chandrayaan-2 mission of 2019, when the Vikram lander crashed into the lunar surface. The primary objective of the mission is simple—showcase the space agency’s capability to complete a soft-landing on the Moon. With the mission, India has joined a small and exclusive club of countries that have managed to soft land on the Moon. So far, the club has three members—the United States, the Soviet Union and China.

Here are the LIVE Updates on the Chandrayaan-3 landing:

Rough-braking phase begins

The speed of the Chandrayaan-3 lander module will be reduced from over 6000 kilometres per hour to 500 kilometres per hour in the rough braking phase of a little over 10 minutes, says ISRO.

Automatic landing sequence triggered at 5.44 PM IST

The Automated Landing Sequence was triggered when Chandrayaan 3 reached a predetermined point at 5.44 PM IST. Upon receiving the ALS command, the LM activates the throttleable engines for powered descent. “The mission operations team will keep confirming the sequential execution of commands,” ISRO has stated. The Chandrayaan-3 mission has begun its powered descent.

Key upgrades in Chandrayaan-3

ISRO chief S Somanath said that the upgrades to the mission are “failure-based,” meaning that scientists looked at what went wrong with the Chandrayaan-2 mission to improve its successor. Here are some of the upgrades.

  1. Strengthened legs: The legs of the new Vikram lander have been strengthened to ensure that it can land safely up to a speed of 10.8 kilometres per hour. Of course, this might not really be useful if a situation like Chandrayaan-2 arises, when the lander was going at a speed of around 580 kilometres per hour when crashing.
  2. Bigger fuel tank: The Chandrayaan-3 mission carries more fuel than its predecessor to make sure that it can make last-minute changes if necessary.
  3. More solar panels: The new Vikram lander has solar panels on all four of its faces instead of just two, as seen with its predecessor.
  4. Additional instruments and improved software: More crucial, the Chandrayaan-3 mission has additional instruments and improvements to its software to aid the soft-landing effort. This includes the Laser Doppler Velocimeter, which will fire laser beams to the lunar surface to calculate the Lander’s speed. The updated software features multiple redundancies that will help it cope with different scenarios.

The four phases at the end

The last few minutes of the Moon landing were referred to as the “15 minutes of terror” by K Sivan, chairperson of ISRO during Chandrayaan-2. Those 15 minutes will remain equally as crucial and nerve-wracking during the Chandrayaan-3 mission and comprises four phases:

  1. Rough braking phase: During this phase, the lander’s horizontal velocity should reduce from around 6,000 kilometres per hour to near zero for a soft landing.
  2. Attitude holding phase: At a height of around 7.43 kilometres above the lunar surface, the lander will tilt from a horizontal to a vertical position while covering a distance of 3.48 kilometres.
  3. Fine breaking phase: This will last around 175 seconds during which time the lander will travel about 28.52 kilometres horizontally to the landing site while reducing the altitude by around 1 kilometre. Chandrayaan-2 lost control between the Attitude hold and fine-braking phases.
  4. Terminal descent: This is the final stage when the fully vertical lander should drop down on the Moon’s surface.

ISTRAC and MOX

ISRO’s ISTRAC (Indian Space Research Organisation’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command) centre in Bengaluru and its mission  control facility or MOX will be the pillars supporting the Chandrayaan-3 mission as it tries to make history by landing on the Moon.

ISTRAC provides telemetry, tracking and command services from the time a rocket launches till the end of the lifespan of the mission. It has a network of ground stations at Bengaluru, Lucknow, Mauritius, Sriharikota, Port Blair, Thiruvananthapuram, Brunei and Biak (Indonesia) and Deep Space Network stations.

The MOX facility for Chandrayaan-3 is set up at ISTRAC, just like it was for Mangalyaan, Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2.

Sharma will join eminent personalities such as astronauts Sunita Williams and S Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, to provide insights on the live simulcast of Chandrayaan-3 #countdowntohistory

Chandrayaan 3 Live: Brother-in-arms Nasa, ESA support Isro in tracking Chandrayaan-3, will play key role in landing mission

With the Chandrayaan-3 lander’s soft landing on Moon scheduled at 6.04 pm on Wednesday, brother-in-arms Nasa and European Space Agency (ESA), which have been continuously lending support to Isro in tracking the spacecraft during its 3.84 lakh km journey to the Moon from the Earth, will on Wednesday play a key role in communicating with the lander module during the final descent phase.

Chandrayaan-3 mission: All you need to know

Isro’s ambitious third Moon mission Chandrayaan-3’s Lander Module (LM) is all set to land on the lunar surface on Wednesday evening, as India eyes to become the first country to reach the uncharted south pole of Earth’s only natural satellite.

Here are the key things to know about the moon landing:

Time of landing

Isro said the live telecast of the landing operations at MOX/ISTRAC begins at 5.20 pm on Wednesday, ahead of the scheduled touch-down of the lander with a rover in its belly near the south polar region around 6.04 pm.

Overall process may take 30 minutes’

Isro chairman S Somanath said that the overall process of landing may take around 30 minutes. “The exact timeline would depend on the systems and landing conditions. We have to decide whether to land at the first visible site or choose another safer spot based on hazard detection,” he said.

Vikram’s function

The US, Russia and China have landed probes on the Moon, three of them in the southern latitudes, but India will be the first, if successful, to land close to the lunar south pole. Learning from the previous failure, Vikram this time has sturdier legs that can withstand landing velocities up to 10.8kmph. Isro said Vikram has been having a smooth sail.

After landing, Vikram will extend a ramp for Pragyan to roll out and explore the surface and start studies. Isro has packed Vikram and Pragyan with instruments. The lander and the rover are designed to function for one lunar day (14 Earth days).

Challenges

Among the landing challenges would be lunar dust. Firing onboard engines close to the surface results in backward flow of hot gases and dust! The hard, fine lunar dust has negative charge which makes it stick to surfaces and thereby interfere with deployment mechanisms including that of the solar panel.
