The Union Minister for Health and Family launched Mission Parivar Vikas on World Population Day (11th of July 2017) for better family planning services. The mission was launched with an objective to provide easy access to high-quality family planning alternatives based on reliable services, information and supplies with rights based framework.
What is Mission Parivar Vikas?
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has introduced Mission Parivar Vikas, a new initiative aimed at making family planning services more accessible for everyone. This initiative covers a range of components, from providing services to promoting awareness and ensuring that necessary resources are available. It also focuses on training healthcare workers, creating a supportive environment, and closely monitoring progress to effectively manage the Total Fertility Rate (TFR).
The ultimate aim of this initiative is to bring down the TFR to 2.1 by 2025. Mission Parivar Vikas is currently active in 145 districts across seven states, impacting a significant portion of the population, especially in areas with high TFRs. By emphasizing the health of mothers and infants, the program hopes to make significant strides in reducing maternal and infant mortality and improving overall well-being.
Background
Since the turn of the century, the Union Government has been steadfast in its commitment to supporting families in planning for their futures. Through initiatives like the National Population Policy (NPP-2000), introduced to stabilize population growth, and bolstered by the comprehensive approach of the National Health Mission (NHM) since 2005, efforts have been made to ensure access to family planning services across the country. The National Health Policy (NHP) of 2017 further solidified these efforts by setting clear targets for population stabilization.
Additionally, recognizing the need for focused action, the launch of Mission Parivar Vikas in July 2017 marked a significant step forward. This mission, operating in 145 high-fertility districts across seven priority states, aims to enhance access to contraceptives and support services through various outreach programs and awareness campaigns. Through these endeavors, the government is striving to empower families to make informed choices about their reproductive health, ultimately fostering healthier communities nationwide.
Objectives
- Our primary aim with ‘Mission Parivar Vikas‘ is to make sure that everyone has easy access to top-notch family planning options. We want to provide accurate information, dependable services, and supplies within a framework that respects everyone’s rights.
- We’re working hard to make sure that contraceptives are readily available to those who need them. This means guaranteeing reliable services and coordinating with new promotional initiatives, all while ensuring there’s always enough supply.
- Another crucial aspect of our mission is to train and support healthcare providers. By building their skills and knowledge, we can ensure that everyone receives the care they deserve.
- Creating a supportive environment is key. We want to make sure that people feel empowered to make their own decisions about family planning, and that they have the resources and support they need to do so.
- Close monitoring and effective implementation are vital. We’re committed to keeping a careful eye on our progress and making any necessary adjustments to ensure that our mission is successful.
Conclusion
Ensuring that women have access to a range of high-quality reproductive services goes far beyond just technological progress and wider availability of contraceptives. It’s about recognizing and respecting a woman’s autonomy in making decisions about her own body and future. These services aren’t just about physical health; they’re about empowering women to plan their families according to their own desires and circumstances. This access isn’t just a matter of policy; it’s about ensuring that every woman can lead a fulfilling life and contribute to the betterment of her community and society as a whole.
