International Day Of Women in Diplomacy

The International Day of Women in Diplomacy (IDWID) is observed annually on June 24 to honor and recognize remarkable women in the fields.

People around the globe observe the International Day of Women in Diplomacy (IDWID) annually on June 24 to honor and recognize remarkable women in the fields of diplomacy and decision-making. Historians credit Diana Abgar, an Armenian ambassador, as the first female diplomat of the 20th century.

Theme Of International Day of Women in Diplomacy

The Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) has chosen the theme “Breaking Barriers, Shaping the Future: Women in Diplomacy for Sustainable Development” for this year’s IDWID Inaugural Forum. Increase in the number of women taking part in the decision-making and diplomatic roles is a vital aspect of women empowerment and gender equality; which are essential to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The theme was selected to highlight these issues.

Background of the day

  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recently established the International Day of Women in Diplomacy (IDWID) during its 76th session, which occurred from September 14, 2021, to September 13, 2022.
  • During the UNGA on June 20, 2022, they adopted a resolution that recognized the importance of women’s contribution to diplomacy and emphasized the need for equal participation of women in decision-making, aligning with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • In accordance with the resolution, the UNGA officially designated June 24 as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy.
