IAS Ranu Sahu: Early Life, Education and Family Background

Chhattisgarh’s IAS Ranu Sahu has been arrested by ED recently. The ED had raided his house in a case related to money laundering, after which he and some other officers were arrested. Let’s know who is Ranu Sahu and how she became an IAS officer.

Academic Journey and Achievements

Ranu Sahu, a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer belonging to the 2010 batch, hails from the Chhattisgarh cadre. Presently, she holds the esteemed position of director in the state agriculture department. However, her career has recently been marked by a significant event as she became the second IAS officer in the state to be arrested in connection with the Coal Levy Scam case. Prior to her, Sameer Vishnoi had faced arrest in October 2022.

Throughout her educational journey, Ranu Sahu has exhibited remarkable academic prowess and achieved several milestones. From her schooling to graduation, post-graduation, and professional courses, she pursued her studies in renowned institutions. Notably, she has consistently secured top ranks and received numerous awards in various examinations and competitions, highlighting her dedication and excellence in the academic sphere.

Schooling and Graduation Achievements

Ranu Sahu attended Kendriya Vidyalaya in Raipur for her schooling and excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities. She achieved remarkable scores of 95% and 93% in her Class 10 and Class 12 board exams, respectively. Additionally, she actively participated in national-level competitions like NTSE, NSO, and NMO, securing prizes and scholarships.

Later, she pursued her Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Mathematics from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Throughout her graduation, she consistently topped her college, earning several medals and certificates for her academic achievements and co-curricular involvement. In 2007, she proudly graduated with a first-class with distinction degree.

Post-graduation and Professional courses

After graduating from St. Xavier’s College, Ranu Sahu pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Applied Mathematics at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. Her academic excellence continued, and she garnered several awards and scholarships for her exceptional research work and publications. In 2009, she successfully completed her post-graduation with a first-class distinction degree.

Determined to join the civil services, Ranu Sahu prepared rigorously for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. Impressively, she cleared all three stages – preliminary, main, and interview – in her first attempt. Securing an outstanding All India Rank (AIR) of 13 out of over 5 lakh candidates who appeared for the exam in 2010, she chose the IAS as her first preference of service and was allotted the Chhattisgarh cadre.

As an IAS officer, Ranu Sahu pursued numerous professional courses to enhance her skills and knowledge. She received comprehensive training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, covering various aspects of administration, governance, law, ethics, public policy, and leadership. Additionally, she actively participated in workshops, seminars, and conferences on diverse subjects related to development, environment, agriculture, education, health, women empowerment, and social justice.

Family Background

Ranu Sahu comes from a humble family background and has achieved success through her hard work and dedication. She was born in a small village called Bhagwanpur in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Her father, Ram Prasad Sahu, is a retired government teacher and her mother, Sushila Sahu, is a homemaker. She has two siblings: a brother and a sister. Her brother, Rajesh Sahu, is an engineer and her sister, Rashmi Sahu, is a doctor.

Marriage

Ranu Sahu is married to Amit Kumar, who is also an IAS officer of the 2010 batch and belongs to the Madhya Pradesh cadre. They have a son named Aryan.

Arrested in Alleged Money Laundering Scandal

Ranu Sahu, a prominent member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) belonging to the 2010 batch and representing the Chhattisgarh cadre, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 22, 2023. The arrest is linked to an ongoing investigation concerning an alleged coal levy scheme, which involves accusations of illegal monetary extraction from coal transporters and miners within the state.

Presently holding the position of director in the state agriculture department, Sahu becomes the second IAS officer to face arrest in connection with this case, with Sameer Vishnoi being apprehended earlier in October 2022.
