HPSC Exam Pattern 2023
HPSC, or the Haryana Public Service Commission, serves as the principal constitutional authority within the Haryana government. It plays a pivotal role in selecting the most qualified candidates for a wide array of civil service and departmental positions across the state of Haryana, overseeing the Haryana State Civil Services Examinations and various other competitive tests.
The PCS exam, which stands for Provincial Civil Services Examination, is the gateway for individuals aspiring to secure administrative roles. Through the State Public Service Commission, candidates can apply for positions falling under Group A and Group B categories.
In preparation for the HCS (Executive Branch) and Allied Services Exam, it is imperative to familiarize oneself with the HPSC Exam Pattern, syllabus, and scoring criteria. This preliminary step lays the foundation for an effective study plan, guiding candidates on what and how to study. Modeled after the UPSC exam, the HPSC Haryana Civil Service examination is conducted in a paper-based format, with offline administration. While the exam format has seen minor adjustments over time, these will be further elaborated upon in this post. Aspirants are encouraged to review question papers from previous years to gain insights into the types of questions posed in the examination.
HPSC Exam 2023 Stages
The Haryana Government has introduced significant changes to the format of the HCS prelims test, aligning it more closely with the IAS prelims exam in terms of paper pattern and question types. The HPSC HCS Exam 2023 consists of three distinct stages:
- Preliminary Examination
- Mains Examination
- Personal Interview
To successfully clear the overall examination, candidates must pass each of these stages. Every year, a multitude of aspiring individuals participate in this rigorous process with the aspiration of securing positions within the state’s administration. However, it’s essential to note that the HPSC announces only a limited number of positions annually, making competition fierce. Consequently, aspiring candidates should prioritize acquiring comprehensive knowledge about the domain they aim to enter as their foremost objective.
HPSC HCS Prelims Exam Pattern 2023
The main obstacle that needs to be overcome is this. There are two objective-type papers with multiple-choice questions in the Haryana PCS Preliminary Exam. These two papers are worth a total of 200 points in total.
General Studies Paper | Max. Marks | Time Allotted |
General Studies Paper I | 100 Marks | 2 hours |
Optional Paper | 100 Marks | 2 hours |
Based on the optional subject you chose from the 19 subjects HPSC offers, Paper-II assesses you. It is important to mark your responses carefully because the Haryana PCS exam uses 1/4th negative marking, meaning that 0.25 marks will be subtracted from the final result for each incorrect response. There won’t be any deductions for questions that aren’t answered. There will be two language options for the exam: Hindi and English.
HPSC HCS Mains Exam Pattern 2023
Once the candidate qualifies for the Preliminary Examination, becomes eligible to write the Mains Exam. The Haryana PCS Mains Exam consists of 5 descriptive papers where 600 marks are up for grabs.

Papers IV and V will test your knowledge of two of the 23 subjects that Haryana PCS has provided. Due to the fact that each of these two exams carries 150 marks, for a total of 300 marks in the Mains Exam, and that both must be finished in the allotted three hours per paper, they carry the highest weight.
HPSC HCS Interview Stage 2023
Based on the results of the main exam, the shortlisted applicants who successfully complete the first two phases are qualified for the personal interview. It takes place on the grounds of the HPSC in Panchkula. There are 75 total marks for the interview. The final merit list would then be created using all 675 of the available marks. The final merit list is compiled using the scores from the Main Exam and Interview.
The HPSC will contact the candidates who pass the HPSC HCS Mains Exam 2023 to schedule a personality test or interview. No applicant will be contacted for the HCS interview unless they receive a combined total of 45% on all of the major written examinations and 33% on the Hindi and English examinations.
