Schemes under Ministry of Earth Sciences

Ministry of Earth Sciences

ACROSS Scheme:

ACROSS Scheme pertains to the atmospheric science programs of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).

  • Recently, the Cabinet Committee gave the green light to the ACROSS scheme. This comprehensive initiative consists of 9 sub-schemes with the aim of improving our understanding of weather and climate patterns.
  • The main objective of ACROSS is to provide accurate weather and climate forecasts for the benefit of society. It focuses on important aspects such as cyclone warnings, storm surges, heat waves, and thunderstorms.
  • Under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), the scheme involves collaboration between four key institutes: the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS).

O-SMART Scheme:

O-SMART, short for Ocean Services, Technology, Observations, Resources Modelling, and Science, is a government initiative aimed at advancing various activities related to the ocean.

  • It comprises 16 sub-projects focusing on ocean research and development, with a timeframe spanning from 2017-18 to 2019-20.
  • Key objectives include enhancing ocean research capabilities, setting up early warning systems for weather events, and promoting sustainable use of ocean resources.
  • Deliverables include strengthening ocean observations, setting up marine pollution tracking systems, and establishing early warning systems for disasters like tsunamis and storm surges.

Sagar Vani:

Sagar Vani, a system designed to prioritize the safety and livelihoods of fishermen, provides crucial information and alerts in an effort to keep them informed.

  • Managed by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS), it utilizes advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to disseminate information in local languages.
  • The system leverages television and cable networks for alert dissemination and allows access for various stakeholders, NGOs, and government departments involved in disaster management.

Gramin Krishi Mausam Seva (GKMS):

Implemented by the India Meteorological Department in partnership with agricultural institutions, GKMS focuses on providing weather-based advisories to farmers.

  • These advisories, tailored to specific crops and locations, help farmers plan their agricultural activities effectively.
  • Information is transmitted through multimedia channels and SMS to ensure wide accessibility among farming communities.
