Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the upcoming Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park, located in the Bankhandi area of Kangra’s Dehra constituency, will be the first zoo in India to earn certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for sustainable, eco-friendly infrastructure.

IGBC Certification for Sustainability

The park is registered for IGBC certification, which recognizes excellence in sustainable design and landscape planning. This certification will affirm the park’s commitment to environmental standards, with a focus on sustainability and ecological balance.

Project Details and Funding

Spanning an initial 25 hectares, the project is estimated at 230 crore for the first phase, targeting completion by the third quarter of 2025. The full development will require a total investment of 619 crore, making it a central tourist hub in Kangra and nearby areas.

Zoo Features and Biodiversity Initiatives

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has approved 34 enclosures for the park, including a “Van Vaibhav Path” and “Biodiversity Court” to house 73 animal species, such as Asiatic lions, hog deer, crocodiles, monitor lizards, gharials, and diverse bird species. Highlights will include a nocturnal house for rare feline species and a wetland aviary for indigenous birds in a natural habitat.

Economic Impact and Sustainable Tourism Vision

Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the park will drive tourism, generating employment and self employment opportunities for local youth and strengthening the local economy. With a blend of sustainability, unique attractions, and natural beauty, Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park is expected to enhance Kangra’s reputation as a premier eco-tourism destination, supporting the state government’s goals for sustainable development and establishing Kangra as Himachal Pradesh’s “Tourism Capital.”
