Context:-

Recently, Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR), Lucknow organised a day-long second “Chintan Shivir on CRTDHs Empowering MSMEs” under Common Research and Technology Development Hub (CRTDH) programme of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Facts:

  • Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR): IITR is an institution based in Lucknow, India, focused on toxicology research. It organized the “Chintan Shivir” to promote innovation among MSEs.
  • Common Research and Technology Development Hub (CRTDH): The CRTDH program, part of DSIR, facilitates collaboration between institutions and MSEs, providing resources and funding to enhance research, technology development, and innovation.
  • Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs): MSEs are small-scale businesses in India. CRTDHs aim to empower them through research, development, and skill enhancement, increasing their competitiveness and employment potential.
  • Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR): DSIR is a government body in India that promotes scientific and industrial research and development activities. The CRTDH program is part of its efforts to boost innovation in MSEs.
  • Innovation and Skill Enhancement: CRTDHs offer MSEs opportunities for developing new products, refining processes, and improving skills. These initiatives enhance their ability to compete globally and create more job opportunities.

Objective

Keeping this in view, DSIR has initiated a programme aimed at creation of Common Research and Technology Development Hubs (CRTDHs) to encourage research and technology development activities by MSEs. Partial financial support would be provided to eligible institutions as grant-in aid to establish CRTDHs for enabling MSEs conduct industrial R&D and innovation activities. These hubs would facilitate MSEs to undertake new/improved product/process development and skill enhancement activities. The collaborating institutions would extend hands-on training, skill development and research information facilities to the MSEs, apart from research and technology development infrastructure. Creation of these CRTDHs will enhance productivity, increase the innovative skills of the MSEs and help them become globally competitive, and also generate more employment.

Proposals Invited

Well-defined proposals to establish CRTDHs in the following sectors are invited in the first phase:

  1. Electronic/Renewable Energy
  2. Affordable Health
  3. Environmental interventions
  4. Low Cost Machining
  5. New Materials / Chemical Process

Eligibility

The Applicant Host Organization should be from National laboratories, Public funded bodies or Institutions having a distinct legal entity, which are willing and capable of setting up these CRTDHs in places located in the proximity of clusters of MSEs working in the targeted sector.

Conclusion

The focus on Common Research and Technology Development Hubs within the MSE sector, as exemplified by the recent event organized by IITR, signifies a commitment to driving innovation, skill development, and competitiveness among small-scale enterprises in India. This collaborative approach holds the potential to uplift MSEs and contribute to the overall economic progress of the country.
