Anti Ballistic Missile Defence System

Anti Ballistic Missile

The Indian Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Programme aims to create a shield against ballistic missile threats, with a layered defense system. India’s choice to pursue Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) stemmed largely from concerns raised during the Kargil War in 1999, particularly due to the threat posed by Pakistan’s ballistic missiles.

What are Ballistic missiles?

A ballistic missile/projectile follows a “ballistic trajectory”. The ballistic trajectory represents the path that a projectile (like a missile) follows after its thrust forces (propulsion) cease, and it’s only influenced by gravity and friction (drag forces). Initially, a ballistic missile is guided during lift-off, but afterwards, it relies mainly on gravity with minimal guidance needed.

Key facts

  • The AAD is a part of the two-layered Ballistic Missile Defence system developed by the DRDO, the research and development wing of the Defence Ministry, with the Hyderabad-based Research Centre Impact (RCI).
  • The endo-atmospheric missile is capable of intercepting incoming targets at an altitude of 15 to 25 Kms.
  • The interceptor is a 7.5-metre long single-stage solid rocket-propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator.
  • The second level of the system is the endo-atmosphere AAD missile.
  • The interceptor missile has its own mobile launcher, secure data links for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and sophisticated radars.
