The UP Judiciary Exam follows a three-stage selection process:

1. Preliminary Examination: The UP PCS J preliminary examination serves as the initial phase of the UPPCS Judiciary recruitment procedure.

It consists of two components:

  • Paper I (General Knowledge – 150 marks) and
  • Paper II (Law – 300 marks).

Each component is allotted a time frame of 2 hours and features Multiple Choice Questions. Successfully passing the preliminary exam is crucial for progressing to the mains stage, which is descriptive and plays a vital role in the overall selection process.

  • The PCS J Prelims exam has a maximum score of 450 points.
  • It consists of two papers: General Knowledge and Law.
  • Each paper is allotted a duration of 2 hours.
  • Additionally, there is a penalty of 0.33 marks for incorrect answers in the UPPCS Judiciary prelims exam.

2. Main Examination: To be eligible for the PCS Judiciary preliminary examination, candidates must fulfill specific requirements and are subsequently chosen to participate in the mains examination. This stage is vital as it assesses the overall merit of the candidates for selection. The PCS J mains examination comprises six papers, each valued at a maximum of 1000 marks. Prior to 2023, the examination consisted of five papers, which included a single language paper. All papers in the mains examination are descriptive, necessitating candidates to provide written responses. Candidates may choose to answer the General Knowledge and Law papers in either Hindi or English.
