Why in news?
The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the acquisition of 31 armed MQ-9 Reaper Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from USA.
MQ-9 Reaper
- Also known as Predator B, MQ-9 Reaper is developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI).
- MQ-9 Reaper was designed for long endurance, high-altitude surveillance, and controlled through ground-based humans.
Components of the system
- A MQ-9 Reaper system consists of multiple unmanned aircraft, ground control station, communications equipment, maintenance spares, and personnel.
- The flight crew includes a remotely-operating pilot, sensor operator, and Mission Intelligence Coordinator.
Features
- The aircraft has a maximum speed of 300 mph and a cruising speed of 170-200 mph.
- It can carry a variety of weaponry, including Hellfire missiles and laser-guided bomb units.
- It has maximum endurance of 30 hours during survey missions & 23 hours for offensive mission.
Conclusion
Defence relations between India and the US are growing to new heights. However, they have minor differences over various issues. India must maintain its Defence relations by ensuring self-interest and strategic autonomy.
