The International Nurses Day is annually observed on May 12.

  • It is a global celebration that honours the invaluable contributions of nurses, promotes the nursing profession, and advocates for the well-being of nurses worldwide.
  • It recognizes their dedication, compassion, and expertise in delivering quality healthcare services and shaping the future of healthcare.
Theme : Every year, a specific theme is chosen, and for 2023, the theme for this year is “Our Nurses. Our Future.”
  1. The theme for 2022 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health.
  2. The theme for 2021 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare. 
  3. The theme for 2020 was Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health. 
  4. The theme for 2019 was “Health For All”. And National Nurses Day 2019 theme is “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit”.
History
  1. International Nurses Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.
  2. She was a pioneering figure in nursing.
  3. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Italy. She is considered the founder of modern nursing.
Significance
  1. Raising Awareness: The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of nursing as a profession and the need for continued support and investment in nursing education, research, and resources. 
  2. Celebrating Achievements: International Nurses Day celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of nurses in improving healthcare outcomes, patient safety, and healthcare innovations.
  3. Promoting Nursing Profession: The day promotes nursing as a respected and vital profession, encouraging individuals to consider nursing as a career choice.
Other Important Factors:
  1. They are the key factor in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
  2. National Nurses Associations (NNAs) play an important role in encouraging nurses, providing education, well informed, advice so that they can deliver their work properly.
  3. Also, NNA works with governmental and non-governmental organisations to strengthen health care systems.

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was a major global public health emergency and nurses comprised the major part of medical workforce.
