Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)

Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) aims at correcting the imbalances in the availability of affordable healthcare facilities in the different parts of the country in general, and augmenting facilities for quality medical education in the under-served States in particular. The scheme was approved in March 2006.

First Phase

The first phase of the PMSSY is aimed at enhancing healthcare infrastructure across various states. It involves two main aspects: establishing six new institutions similar to AIIMS and upgrading 13 existing government medical colleges.

In this endeavor, six states – Bihar, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, and Uttaranchal – have been chosen based on factors like human development index, literacy rate, poverty levels, and health indicators. Each new institution, estimated to cost Rs 840 crores, will feature a 960-bed hospital catering to a range of medical needs. These hospitals will provide specialized care in 42 disciplines, including ICU services, trauma care, rehabilitation, and Ayush treatments. Furthermore, they will host medical colleges with facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate education, adhering to regulatory norms.

Additionally, existing medical institutions in ten states will undergo upgrades, with a budget of Rs.120 crores per institution. This initiative, with funding from both central and state governments, aims to improve healthcare access and quality across the country.
