Geography and location
Desert National Park covers an area of 3162 km² of which 1900 km² is in Jaisalmer district and remaining 1262 km² is in Barmer district of Rajasthan State. The park was gazetted in 1980. The park mostly consists of sand dunes (44%) but also has pediments, pavements, and structural plains. Desert National Park also has fossils from the Jurassic Period.
Flora and Fauna in Desert National Park
The Thar Desert maintains only some kinds of shrubs, grasses, and xerophytes plants. The cover of a leaf is very much limited and not appropriate for big herbivores, however, camel is an exception. In Desert National Park, the major wildlife found is the spiny- tail lizard, sandfish, desert monitors, chameleons, and a few snakes as the deadly viper and also the krait.
Other prominent animals spotted are Chinkara, the desert fox, blackbuck, and Bengal fox, etc. However, the national park is moderately prosperous in the avian population.
The furthermost attraction of the desert national park is the great Indian bustard which is a highly endangered bird species. The Indian Bustard – which is heavy, large, and graceful draws many bird watchers from across the world. It is a wonderful bird and can be spotted in significantly excellent numbers. The great Indian Bustard migrates at various times locally. The park is a paradise for residents as well as migratory desert birds.
